Betsy DEVOs fits perfectly into the Trump cabinet. She even has the perfect regressive name to go with her regressive opinions: D-E-V-O-s. Are we not men? WE ARE DEVOs.

She knows absolutely nothing about public education. She doesn’t have a degree in education, never went to a public school – but she helped to ruin Detroit’s Public School system by forcing unregulated charter “schools” on the city. Even the Republican Legislators wanted some form of regulation, but she managed to buy their votes before any measures could be passed.

She supports predatory “colleges” like Trump University (it’s still fucking unbelievable there ever was such a thing); and she wants to abolish student loan forgiveness because of course she owns stock in the predatory student loan companies. Talk about a ‘conflict of interest!’

She has no knowledge of basic US history, either, which was evident when she claimed Black colleges were created because they advocated school choice, not because they were forced to do so because of institutionalized racism.

She’s only in this to make more money, clearly…as if the billions she inherited isn’t already enough. Spoiler alert: it’s never enough. Team Trump is all about government of the billionaires, by the billionaires, for the billionaires.

The GOP some time ago decided that public education was another realm of society that could be privatized for the purpose of making big money for certain “entrepreneurs” and, as exclusively as possible, for the training of future employees/consumers for the further growth of antidemocratic, globalized capitalism.

When you re-stratify education, you re-stratify society. No wonder upward mobility has died an ugly death. Combined with all their vicious attacks on the poor and working class – education reform, welfare reform, deregulating Wall Street and dismantling the livable wage job market – this is the society you get.

It’s the inevitable and deliberate outcome of America’s education policies. Democrats and Republicans have both come to embrace a system which ensures that only the elite few who can afford it are educated for their roles as leaders within the existing power structure, while the majority of the population is trained to reject critical thinking; to love Jesus and hate Allah and that money is the only thing that matters. They must also learn to unconditionally accept and value the ‘knowledge’ embodied in standardized testing and embrace the notion that their net worth derives from the results of these ‘tests.’

But the most important lesson American kids learn is HOW TO OBEY AUTHORITY.

Destroying public education is key to this arrangement because access to a decent education has historically been a lifeline out of poverty and a means of achieving social mobility for the masses. The elite want to eliminate all competition. Forever. The last thing these subhumans want is a level playing field. They and their worthless offspring wouldn’t stand a chance…

Betsy DEVOs is all about keeping the rabble from coming to the party, and she’s just one of many tRump appointees to fulfill that mission.
