In April 2018, “president” tRump quietly signed the Death Warrant for the US Postal Service. Here is an excerpt from the text of “Executive Order on the Task Force on the United States Postal System”:
The USPS is on an unsustainable financial path and must be restructured to prevent a taxpayer-funded bailout.
Sec. 2. Establishment. (a) There is hereby established a Task Force on the United States Postal Service (Task Force), to be chaired by the Secretary of the Treasury, as Secretary and as Chairman of the Federal Financing Bank, or his designee, to evaluate the operations and finances of the USPS. (b) It shall be the policy of my Administration that the United States postal system operate under a sustainable business model to provide necessary mail services to citizens and businesses, and to compete fairly in commercial markets.
The USPS manages around 30,000 outlets serving every part of America, even the most remote and rural areas. It employs about 630,000 people in well-paying middle-class jobs including benefits; and it delivers letters and packages across the country for a pittance. The US Postal Service is a jewel of public service excellence.
Therefore, according to the GOP, it must be destroyed.
You can see where this is going, right? In exchange for handing him the Oval Office, the Russian government appears to be succeeding in its long-held dream of destroying NATO and destabilizing the European Union and NAFTA. For his part, tRump is now using his office for the sake of personal profit for himself and his Russian blackmailers, with no regard for how the government actually works.
When your only objective is making a profit, it makes no difference how much destruction you cause in its pursuit. It will be a slow death, but the USPS is next on the list. Get ready to pay a whole lot more to communicate with friends, family, and the outside world.
Privatization has proven time and time again to be less efficient – and far more expensive – than government-managed services. Corporate bureaucracy is way more complex and inefficient than the prevously government run system. Only in America does anyone believe this shit.
Just look at the disasters of privatization which have plagued the US military…which of course aren’t really disasters if you’re in the arms business.
American economic theory since the implementation of “trickle-down” neoliberal policies has essentially been: anything that can be monetized will be monetized, and anything that can’t will be destroyed. If “supply side” economics actually worked like they said it would at the time, wages should have kept pace with inflation and increased our nation’s productivity exponentially since 1980.
But in fact ‘Reaganomics,’ along with Globalization, has had the exact opposite (but totally planned) effect: decoupling productivity and income from the working classes and redistributing the wealth ever upward. No one with half a brain cell believed that average Americans would get any sort of a pay raise following the recent tRump tax cuts. That odious trillion-dollar tax bill was simply the latest example of economic theft from the poor and middle classes, who will pay for the permanent tax cuts through the eradication and downsizing of social programs they depend on.
And the means to fight back non-violently are being slowly eroded as well. Remember the tax cuts for non-millionaires are only temporary.
The baseline GOP economic strategy is that any government service, department, public access or park lands which could potentially make a profit for some rich white guy shall be placed in private hands. This includes not just the Post Office, but all public Parks, Monuments, Forests and access to fresh water. It also includes all educational facilities; prisons; public health and social services, including Social Security and Medicare. And don’t forget The National Endowment for the Arts, Public Radio and Public TV.
Civilized culture must be destroyed; in part to further divide us by denying the human connection through the arts as well.
Ever since Karl Rove made GW Bush ‘Presidential’ and Lott and ‘The Hammer’ created the lock-step Republican Congress, the GOP have been working actively to redo the economic landscape of the America – by privatizing everything they can get their greedy little hands on. Trump is following this privatization trend but he is doing it his way; which is not necessarily the GOP way.
Already back in May, the “president” signed an Executive Order making it easier to fire Federal workers. This is a bigger deal than most people realize. It’s clearly aimed at Union Busting. Unions are virtually the only way workers can make their voices heard. Slowly but surely, this will allow lower courts to systematically weaken worker’s rights. Part of the Koch /ALEC strategy is to make federal employment so unappealing that it will be unable to attract the necessary talent…and then the vision of an incompetent government will magically come true.
Then we’ll begin to hear calls for further privatization of government functions because “the private sector knows how to get things done,” and “the government should be run like a business” etc., etc. We’ve come to a place where the president can weaken government unions and federal worker protections by Executive Order.
Welcome to the jungle.
