Economist Robert Reich recently articulated two types of contemporary societies:
1) Social control
2) Social investment
Social control societies require heavy investment in policing, surveillance, incarceration, immigration enforcement, etc., to control society – using fear to pave to way for racism and oppression of minorities – while the latter deals with using resources for healthcare, education, job security and affordable housing.
America, unsurprisingly, epitomizes the former.
Social control is deadly and unsustainable; it utilizes torture, terror, and oppression to keep citizens in line; draining resources which could be used for constructive purposes – with minority and at-risk communities bearing the brunt of the state sponsored terrorism.
Social Control State: When the security state was established in the aftermath of 9/11, it was obvious that it would be only a matter of time before the USA became a full-blown fascist, authoritarian regime. What followed almost immediately was a loss of civil liberties, illegal electronic eavesdropping on citizens, detainees being whisked away to secret torture locations with no access to legal representations…along with many other human rights violations the mainstream media [MSM] won’t touch with a ten-foot pole.
I was raised in America as the Home of the Brave and the Land of the Free. Where exactly did all these scared little pussies in the GOP come from? When did the ‘Home of Brave’ become the home of traitors, wannabe dictators and frightened children? Just what is it that scares them so much that they have to put all reason, logic and patriotism aside??? Black people? Women? College students? I’m sure they believe tRump’s got their back…but he doesn’t even have his own back.
That such an important and powerful office can be held by such an evil and incompetent subhuman is a failure of the American people, and the US Constitution. Unfortunately, the Constitution has become a virtually sacred text to many; otherwise it is clear that it should be entirely rewritten.
Of course, the Constitution was created when the USA was a loose federation of independent states and before the idea of universal suffrage took hold. The idea then, like that in ancient Rome, was to keep the real power in the hands of a powerful oligarchy no matter what form the government took.
But alas, we live in vastly different times today; for which the Constitution was simply not designed – unlike the postwar constitutions of countries like Germany, Japan and Italy, which ironically the US helped write.
In his inaugural speech, tRrump described the great “American carnage” – a dystopian vision of what he thought America looked like in 2016. Little did we know this was a veiled prophecy: the country we see now is in a shambles; ripped apart by polarization and racism; rife with mass protests; ravaged by a pandemic we failed to contain, and decimated by a totally preventable economic meltdown.
We always knew that Trump would play The Despot card because that’s just who he is. 2016 was not an election, but simply another coup driven by even more evil interests than the cabal which removed JFK.
But tRrump has brought an extra dimension to his despotism: cruelty, mockery, hate, racism, and divisiveness. And through that he has ignited the USA’s own Days of Rage.
tRump covers up his malice and cruelty with the appearance of incompetence. His handlers would like you to believe that he’s inept; that he is just flailing around, stumbling from one crisis to another. But nothing could be further from the truth. tRump is a puppet of a powerful inner circle of religious fanatics and ideological extremists, many of whom have huge financial interests in the Police State – and they certainly have their own political agenda.
The tRump regime is setting the stage for a complete dismantling of American democracy and its ultimate reconstitution into an outright dictatorship.
Every new outrage is a test of how much we will tolerate. If the government can roll out federal troops in major cities across the country and deploy tear-gas and shoot protesters with rubber bullets – all under the guise of stopping some kids from spray-painting City Hall – minus the public outcry it’s a fairly good indicator that the spirit of the American public has already been broken.
A divided, confused citizenry cannot galvanize in any way to stop fascism’s tightening grip. In a nation this big, you can label 100 million people ‘Enemies of the State’ and still leave a comfortable majority blissfully unaffected.
The challenge now is to convince the unwashes massed that their best interests are more aligned with the protesters wielding spray-paint outside the courthouse than with the federal stormtroopers in full riot gear.
The dangers of playing along with this regime are increasing daily, as geopolitical forces are building toward a major cultural flashpoint. The kakistocracy is brilliant at the game of Divide And Conquer, but not so good at anything else.
This can’t end well.
