In the USA we have something called the MONROE DOCTRINE, which of course forbids any foreign power from placing military forces ANYWHERE in the Western Hemisphere. Remember how freaked out everyone was during the Cuban missile crisis? From that point on, no other nation has been allowed to put weapons in our ‘backyard.’
Imagine if Russia forged a military alliance with Canada and Mexico and began placing weapons on our borders. “Hey, no big deal, right? Like, what’s the problem..?
So really, why did the USA push this issue so hard? Why is it so crucial to make Ukraine a NATO country right now so that we can place weapons right on Russia’s border? Basically, it’s because ultimately we want to overthrow Russia’s government [such as it is…], replace Putin with a new Boris Yeltsin, and steal all of their resources.
Fact.
Until we are able to do that, the entire point of this little endeavor is to sell more weapons to our “allies” so we can keep those shareholders happy. It makes no difference to them how many innocent people die.
I’m sorry, but people are getting fired from their jobs now simply for not denouncing Vladimir Putin. That is crazy!
Why is America the only nation that has a fucking right to defend itself? I never understood that. Yes, this war is horrible – all wars are horrible! – but Putin is certainly no worse than all of the dictators the USA has installed all over the world after overthrowing their democratically elected leaders – for the last 70 years! [The examples are too numerous to mention here…]
NATO knew this invasion would be the result of doubling down and refusing to negotiate a reasonable outcome with Vlad the Impaler…who BTW had indicated he was willing to sit down with NATO to discuss the situation…
Because again, ultimately the goal is more profits for the WAR MACHINE. Our entire foreign policy is based on weapons sales, and virtually NOTHING ELSE. ‘Humanitarian Aid’ is a thing of the past. We haven’t even had an ambassador to Ukraine since tRump fired Marie Yovanovitch over 2 years ago…
We like to pretend that the USA is simply a benign hegemon seeking to promote European stability. That has never been the case. It certainly wasn’t true under the tRump regime…
We are NOT the good guys in this scenario. There are no good guys anywhere, anymore.
Like anyone in the DoD gives a shit about human life?! I mean, c’mon, man! Crocodile tears.
Earlier this year [2022], the US military confirmed for the first time a 2019 airstrike in Syria that killed up to 80 people, mostly women and children. At the time they claimed the strike was justified as it killed Islamic State fighters who were attacking coalition forces. And then they lied about it and covered it up…
And funny how the US media keeps mentioning with utter disgust Russia’s use of cluster bombs and fuel-air explosives! Hey, guess what?
Fuel air explosives [FAE] were developed extensively by Honeywell for use in Vietnam for clearing helicopter landing zones and Viet Cong tunnels for US military forces. FAEs were quickly adopted by the Soviet military for clearing minefields, were then extended to substituting for the thousands of artillery rounds needed to punch holes in massed NATO forward defenses. Stockpiles of Fuel-Air Explosives are currently believed to be held by the United States, Russia, China, India, and possibly Israel and Iraq. Soviet FAE’s were reportedly used against the Chinese as early as 1969 and are now in their third generation, having been extensively field-tested in Afghanistan.
FAEs are not currently banned under international law.
The majority of the world signed a treaty banning the use of cluster bombs in 2010. However, the USA, along with Brazil, China, Egypt, Greece, India, Iran, Israel, North Korea, South Korea, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, Russia, Singapore, Slovakia and Turkey HAVE NOT ratified the treaty – which is not surprising considering many of these same non-signatories are the leading weapons traffickers in the world today.
The current US policy, issued under “president” Donald tRump in November 2017, replaced a directive on cluster munitions issued by the George W. Bush administration in July 2008. The 2017 policy abandoned a requirement that by the end of 2018 the US could no longer use the notoriously unreliable cluster munitions which mostly kill civilians and make up more than a 1% percent of global unexploded ordnance.
Instead, the policy permits the US to use up all of the millions of cluster munitions still in existing stocks “until sufficient quantities” of “enhanced and more reliable” versions are developed and fielded. It also facilitates US acquisition of cluster munitions from foreign sources to replenish stocks.
The Biden administration has not reviewed or amended the 2017 policy.
Meanwhile, this horrible, awful war in Ukraine is certainly good news for the some people. Defense and cybersecurity stocks are skyrocketing thanks to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine:
Raytheon Technologies has seen its share price increase more than 10% since the invasion began
Lockheed Martin, the maker of the F-35 fighter jet, advanced more than 5.4% on Monday.
Northrop Grumman, leading manufacturer of attack and surveillance drones, saw its stock rise close to 7% on Monday, after rising 3% since the Ukrainian conflict began.
Huntington Ingalls Industries, the largest US military shipbuilder, is up over 7%.
Britain’s BAE Systems, the largest defense contractor in Europe, Germany’s Rheinmetall, France’s Thales and Italy’s Leonardo have all seen their share prices rise sharply.
Oh, my. I am SHOCKED. SHOCKED I tell you. Who could have possibly foreseen this?
