DON’T LOOK UP is the best movie I’ve seen in years. No other recent film so perfectly captures the absurdity of the times we live in: the rampant narcissism, the infuriating stupidity; the society we’ve created for ourselves is just so sad and pathetic it’s hard to watch it all reflected back at us.
Frankly, I’ve been rooting for humanity’s demise since before tRump was even nominated for president. I still have a GIANT METEOR 2016 bumper sticker on my studio door…so, yeah, bring it on, I say…
But this meteor / comet / whatever is simply and analogy – and a rather obvious one – for the human race’s innate ability to ignore inconvenient facts in general, and global climate change in particular.
That is why so many critics hated DON’T LOOK UP, since most Umerkins – especially republicans and their enablers – tend to take themselves way too seriously.
Every patriotic Umerkin will tell you they live in the “greatest country on Earth” – and they say this with utter conviction. While the rest of the world has never quite been on board with this sentiment, it still comes as a shock when a fictional movie like DON’T LOOK UP is more akin to the current reality than mere satire.
Having your firmly held beliefs and convictions exposed as totally bogus is never easy for dumb people. It often leads to anger, frustration, and the need to lash out at the messenger – rather than inspire any sort of re-evaluation or self-reflection. Trying to get these people to see the errors of their ways is a fool’s errand in itself.
The reason why the mainstream media panned it is because they saw so much of themselves in it, and couldn’t stand the reflection. When you are a major part of the problem, the last thing you want is a bunch of ‘liberal’ Hollywood smart alecks pointing out that the emperor has no clothes.
The World is adrift without any sort of spiritual foundation. Some try to fill it with Social Media; others with rampant consumerism. The underlying ‘message’ behind DON’T LOOK UP is clear: humanity’s fate in the cosmos is ultimately tethered to the planet and the Biosphere that sustains us. The rest is trivial.
Quality satire isn’t dead in the USA, but it’s mighty hard to pull off these days; especially in the current political environment. How do you mock a society populated by people who make fools of themselves on a daily basis? How do you shame the shameless? The country is run by dullards and corporate tools who don’t even pretend to care anymore.
It’s not difficult to land punches on a target THAT big, but holy crap, it’s not easy…and DON’T LOOK UP managed to hit a bullseye.
Commentators here who attack DON’T LOOK UP complain about the film in similar ways. It’s as if they are reading from a playbook. They claim the film is poorly produced. It obviously isn’t. They claim the script and performances are bad, which is also bullshit. What they tend not to say is that what they really don’t like about the film is the message it conveys and what it says about society; particularly Umerkin society.
Personally, I’m not much of a “movie guy” but I highly recommend DON’T LOOK UP. The script is razor sharp and the cast is excellent but under normal circumstances this film would be impossible to finance, even with eight A-listers in the cast.
Kudos to Netflix for having the guts to make this film. You go, Albuquerque!
The mere presence of Leonardo DiCaprio and Meryl Streep in a ‘message’ movie is enough to send the corporate media into a tizzy. Reason enough for all the naysayers on the alt-right to attack the film.
And special mention must go to Mark Rylance for his super-creepy send-up of billionaire kingmaker Peter Thiel [as ‘Peter Isherwell’]. His character was spot on, and Meryl Streep as president Orlean totally took the piss out of tRump. This too is cause for all the haters to hate the film.
In the end, DON’T LOOK UP compressed so many allegories, tropes and metaphors into one film that it was almost too painful to watch in that “stop it, I get it!” way. People take themselves so seriously today. They don’t see the absurdity of their own behavior anymore.
Forget the apocalypse; it was the social commentary that I enjoyed. The film highlighted the manipulation of mass psychology through corporate control of the media and it touched on the quasi religion of consumerism – not to mention the terrifying reality of mad billionaire geniuses running global corporations based solely on algorithms and the collection of personal data!
And it’s not too far-fetched to consider that the global elite already have plans to evacuate the planet when the shit finally really does hit the fan.
DON’T LOOK UP is one of those films that really does have something for everyone – including full frontal nudity – even if ever so fleeting.
My only complaint: not enough disaster porn…
