Gotta keep the riff-raff out –

cynical efforts
only serve to show
the outside world
how low you can go
to stay solvent

All over town
those nice shiny brand
spanking new
fences, walls and gates
are springing up
round the convenience stores
parks and open spaces
where the homeless
used to congregate

Walmart shut down
the only store within miles
leaving us a food desert
but they still gladly pay
for that 24-hour security
guard service
to patrol an empty
fucking parking lot –

Oh man them good ole boys
must think it’s a hoot
driving round in circles
looking for something to shoot at
sipping on hooch;
because god knows
they drug test those fuckers
so it’s all that they can do

Then they shut down
the Walgreens pharmacy
where I got my
prescriptions filled;
so now I have to drive
twice as far, only
to find out the ‘warehouse’
ran out of all my meds!

they can afford to keep
those goddam flood lights
cranking on all night long
sucking up all that
precious energy –
no problem for them
it’s the same old song
people don’t matter
it’s just another subsidy
