American pop culture on the skids

Americans have never been known for their sense of humor. They are way too prudish; unhip, too “PC”- and most are simply too dumb to “get it.” Concepts like satire and parody are difficult for the average American to grasp, put it that way. A lot of people consider anything which is personally offensive to their minimal tastes to be a crime against humanity and everything they believe in.

Those people need to lighten the fuck up.

The moral crusaders of today completely miss the point. They fail to understand the historical importance of satire and humor in a democratic society. They want to put limitations on free speech in order to satisfy a misguided crusade against everything they don’t personally agree with. American popular culture reflects the festering moral decay which has infected our nation.

Today people are constantly bludgeoned over the head with PC-language like “inclusion” and “diversity” but they don’t have a clue what they really mean.

A perfect example of this premise is the recent pseudo-controversy surrounding comedian Jerry Seinfeld when he recently announced that he no longer performs at colleges because campuses have become too ‘Politically Correct.’ He told US Magazine: “I don’t play colleges. I hear a lot of people tell me: ‘Don’t go near colleges. They’re so PC…”

Fellow comics told Seinfeld they have to be careful not to make off-color jokes which might offend some segment of the student body – or society in general.

Chris Rock told The Dish: “I stopped playing colleges, and the reason is because they’re way too conservative,” he said. “Not in their political views—not like they’re voting Republican—but in their social views and their willingness not to offend anybody…You can’t say ‘the black kid over there.’ No, it’s ‘the guy with the red shoes.’ You can’t even be offensive on your way to being inoffensive…”

The current super-PC environment is detrimental to the kind of critical humor which is so sorely needed in this country today. If only Bill Hicks were still alive it would be a different world, that’s for sure. We need a new George Carlin or a Richard Pryor if we can’t get Bill.

Thank God for guys like Jim Jeffries…but he’s Australian…Russell Brand…he’s British…oh, well.

Name me one American comic who makes a living criticizing unfettered capitalism or racism or gun worship or religion or endless war.

Just saying.

Increasingly, jokes can’t be told without fear of a media backlash. Socially relevant humor is dead in this country. Corporate interests killed it. Americans – especially the fascist neocons and their minions – are by and large dull, sullen, law-abiding, troop-supporting, Bible-thumping imbeciles. The neocon sense of humor resorts to simply making fun of others: women, minorities, liberals, gays, foreigners. Lots of “Obama = monkey” jokes: which are never, ever funny. Trust me.

Clearly, there isn’t much humor or joie de vivre in these people’s lives to begin with if that’s all they’ve got.

They are angry and severely sexually repressed – and they’re armed to the friggin’ teeth!

It goes without saying they have absolutely no sense of humor.

When you have a system as corrupt and repressive as America circa 2015, people are understandably incapable of laughing at themselves or at society – or anything else for that matter. They get really uncomfortable when you start making jokes about guns or religion or race. They’re too busy hating and fearing each other to enjoy life or see much humor in anything.

Millennials – having grown up on a steady diet of Political Correctness – have some pretty convoluted opinions when it comes to free speech. But PC-hypersensitivity is a poor excuse for political discourse. That’s what it has come to in the USA, unfortunately. The middle class can’t seem to admit that the war has already been lost. We’re living behind our own Iron Curtain of self-censorship and denial.

‘Progressives’ try to avoid their stunning societal failures by seizing on minutiae such as this.

But this is not a ‘liberal vs. conservative’ argument: this is solely about free speech and having the right to say something funny and potentially offensive without being vilified by others. That’s what true progressives are supposed to be fighting to protect. But they don’t seem to get that.

In ancient Athenian democracy, public opinion could be greatly influenced by the political satires performed in the theaters and in the Polis. They poked fun at politicians, philosophers, and fellow artists. The plays gave an invaluable insight into ancient Greek society, with details on the workings of political institutions, legal systems, religious practices, education and warfare.

Throughout recorded history humor, parody, and satire have been used to offend and ridicule the ruling classes as a means to expose hypocrisy and influence public opinions. Comedy has traditionally played an important role in democratic societies. That is why we must kill it…

America’s collective sense of humor has seriously regressed and it has become totally infantilized since the Reagan era. What we need in this country is a lot more real humor, a lot more nudity, and a lot less senseless violence.

We are going in the opposite direction.
