An orderly and just society is not only more humane; it supports the general welfare and the prosperity of all its citizens. We must have a moral, ethical and impartial society in order to make this happen.
The concentration of political power in the hands of an elite few impairs our ability to adapt policy to changing economic conditions and it alienates the citizens from participating in the political process. Alienation breeds hostility and hostility begets violence. With violence comes anarchy and the breakdown of social order.
Of course all of this is very bad for business. American corporations must understand this basic lesson of history and seek to broaden rather than restrict civil liberties and citizens’ ability to participate in government. The best interests of all parties would be served by raising the minimum wage, broadening the voting base, protecting freedom of speech and increasing access to medical care. Most importantly, there must be more educational opportunities for all citizens.
Alexander Hamilton summed it up best when he wrote, “Why has government been instituted at all? Because the passions of men will not conform to the dictates of reason and justice without restraint…”
The problem is that there are no longer any laws restraining the government. The USA PATRIOT ACT and CITIZEN’S UNITED put an end to that. Our founding fathers did their best to provide a system of checks and balances that prevent too much power being accumulated in any one person’s hands. They put several restraints on government power in the Constitution, but they left the ultimate oversight of government up to the people.
And that’s where we failed. For too long, Americans have put too much faith in their elected leaders and we have failed to properly scrutinize them or punish those who abused their power.
The other problem is that the global stock markets seem to absolutely LOVE IT when the world falls into chaos and disorder. The truly wealthy actually make MORE money during times of crisis. Trump’s victory has been a major boost to shareholders everywhere. Watch how the stock market jumps to record highs during the next global disaster…
On top of that, neither the founding fathers nor any of their successors implemented the means necessary for restraining the power of corporations, which has now gotten completely out of control. CITIZENS UNITED was one of the most Orwellian, truly evil pieces of legislation ever conceived and it must be repealed. Otherwise the battle is lost. Corporations are clearly not people. That is complete nonsense.
Companies that offshore jobs, destroy unions and lobby against workers’ rights should be prohibited from peddling their wares and services in the United States. Trump’s idea of imposing tariffs on such companies will merely see them pass the increased costs onto taxpayers in another form. A perfect example of this is the way multi-million dollar criminal and civil fines imposed on big pharmaceutical companies for fraudulence and injurious marketing practices are simply passed on to the consumer via tax-loopholes. Any losses are recovered by inflating drug prices.
Now that the corporations control all of the major media in the US, the actions of our government are masked by a wall of secrecy. Public scrutiny is nearly impossible under the current regime.
A properly administered government is essential to an orderly society. Lacking adequate public scrutiny, no Republic can survive.
