Lament for the 1970s

Former president Jimmy Carter recently died at the ripe old age of 100. Proof that only the good DON’T die young…

He was the last truly good man to be President of the United States. Carter was only denied a second term due to the treasonous intrigues and machinations of a virtual parallel government run by CIA director William Casey, George Bush and other cronies of Ronnie Reagan: the so-called ‘October Surprise.’

They cut an illegal deal with Iran to hold the American hostages prisoners for a few extra months until the exact hour of Reagan’s swearing in as president. These traitors had no authority to act on behalf of the US government, and yet our good buddy Israel was more than willing to act as the go-between as part of the scheme to sell desperately needed weapons to Iran. [Carter was considered an enemy of the Israel military because he negotiated the historic Arab/Israeli peace accord in 1978].

I never thought growing up in the 1970s would end up being the twilight of my life. After the turmoil of the 60s, I thought the 70s were the most boring time to be alive. True, there was Disco, but now I long for those days before social media destroyed society and everyone became addicted to their fucking Iphones!

The 1970s began with so much promise. After the Watergate scandal, Nixon was forced to resign in disgrace. The War Machine was on the defensive against growing public opinion once the Pentagon Papers were released in 1973, support for the Viet Nam war was finally waning and the tide against endless war began to turn in the public’s mind. People began to demand a ‘Peace Dividend’ – sharing the wealth of a fair and equitable society.

The Viet Nam war was officially over by 1975 and anti-war sentiment was rife in the USA. Young people were turning against the War Machine and a more progressive, liberal outlook started to take hold of the nation. This was also reflected in American politics. The country was heading toward a more inclusive society, with a healthy welfare state and strong and growing middle class.

Affirmative Action was working as it should, enabling millions of minorities to compete for better jobs across the board. Women and people of color had the full force of the law behind them to protect their status. We had Roe v. Wade…

College was still relatively inexpensive and the dream of a college degree was available to anyone willing to put in the work. Colleges were bastions of liberalism and progressive thought. There were no Nazis on campus back in my day, and if there were, they were still hiding under that rock they would later crawl out from.

Jobs were plentiful and wages were competitive. You could still get a decent job without a college education. Cost of living increases were doled out each year and pensions and retirement funds were strengthened and protected as vital to the US economy.

The 70s were a time when rich people actually paid tax

A new more progressive outlook engulfed the nation along with an acceptance of personal freedoms such as gay rights and Women’s Liberation.  Of course, the GOP fought all these reforms, even then. But they were in the minority.

That “dumbing-down” program initiated by the Reagan administration has worked to perfection. The proof is right before our eyes. The majority of Americans elected an illiterate cretin as their next “president.”

American schools no longer teach relevant facts. They are duty bound to political agendas which require that humans are programmed to obey orders and grow up to be good consumers…and pretty much nothing else…

We used to be near the top in global rankings in every category, but now the USA is at the bottom of nearly every metric, from healthcare to education to freedom of the press.

Back in the 70s American students were beginning to catch up with the rest of the world. Now we are among the dumbest people on the planet. No one bats an eye.

In my day, the religious fanatics and hate mongers were kept on the fringes of society where they belonged. Now they run the show! How ironic.

Comedy and satire was systematically destroyed in America thanks to the fanatical right-wing Christian “PC-Police” who demand that no one is offended by anything, ever. The fanatics have a very thin skin and they are offended very easily.

Even on behalf of people they’ve never met!

There used to be humor. We used to have people like George Carlin and Richard Pryor and Cheech and Chong! We had Saturday Night Live and we had movies like Blazing Saddles and The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Animal House and Still Smokin’ and Young Frankenstein. They tended to show casual drug use in a positive light. There was nudity. They were actually funny.

We had Monty Python, and although they were English, they kept Americans offended throughout most of the 70s. Especially their feature films The Meaning of Life and Life of Brian. They were banned in most of the Heartland…

None of that sort of thing can exist anymore in our sterilized, homogenized, “PC” society here in the USA, where only the most mediocre, pedestrian culture is promoted. If it doesn’t appeal to the lowest common denominator, it has no place in American society.

The US space program was robust in the 1970s and although budget cuts eventually affected NASA, America still had the most advanced space program in the world. The moon landings ended in December ’72, but then there was Skylab and eventually the joint Russian-American link up in 1976.

Fast forward to 2024 and the only people entitled to fly in space are billionaires and their lackeys.

Billionaires get to have unlimited space travel while NASA still has to use the Russians to launch our astronauts to the aging, obsolete International Space Station. Meanwhile, China has their own ultra high-tech space station and they’re kicking our ass in space. They will be landing people on the moon in a few years…while American billionaires take their friends on orbital joy rides.

We did have the fake ‘Energy Crisis’ in the mid-70s supposedly as a result of the Yom Kippur War in 1973. But of course later it was proven that the oil embargo of ’73 and ’74 was a direct result of US conspiring with the Arabs to reduce oil production…

Here is something that really bugs me: I’m glad we didn’t have fucking ONLINE GAMBLING shoved down our throats in the 70s. When I was growing up gambling was considered a vice to be avoided at all costs. But then, thanks to lobbying efforts and support from the GOP, states quietly overturned centuries-old laws prohibiting gambling in order to make it happen. Suddenly it was no longer sinful. Even the Buybull belt was on board, as long as there was money to be made off poor people! Hooray for mammon!

It’s just another way to suck the last bit of disposable income from the working poor. There is currently a major gambling addiction crisis sweeping the nation, but of course the mainstream media [MSM] ignores it, ensuring that the crisis will continue to grow.

Back in the 70’s, drug companies weren’t allowed to market their toxic products directly to patients. Now Big Pharma can sell the most lethal, harmful drugs, with side effects far worse than the actual condition. Some popular drugs actually list DEATH as a possible side effect!

Give me RINVOQ, doc, I’m feeling lucky..!

And I would kill to drive a Fucking STICK SHIFT again!! Does anyone even make manual transmissions, anymore? Not in this country.

All in all, I think the best thing about the 70s was the music. As far as I am concerned the decade had it all, from rock to prog rock to glam to disco to funk, punk to post punk and new wave…

I don’t think we will ever top that era – judging by the absolute shite that pop music is today.

Here’s for living in the past. I long for the simple life of the 1970s when we were supposed to be the good guys and the commies were the bad guys. Now we are the bad guys! Sad.

Because of course once they booted Jimmy Carter and good ole Ronnie Reagan’s clan took over, it was all downhill from there. Everything is worse than it used to be. I never envisioned such a bleak, hopeless existence for so many of my fellow Americans.

We all just need to make the best of what will certainly be a nightmarish future, and find some way to survive. How did the primary goal of so many [well-funded] people become simply punishing the rest of the citizens to the point of destruction?

Maybe if I get really high and crank up some Zeppelin on the stereo it will all go away…at least for a little while..?

  1. A rat done bit my sister Nell.
    (with Whitey on the Moon)
Her face and arms began to swell.
    (and Whitey’s on the Moon)
I can’t pay no doctor bill.
    (but Whitey’s on the Moon)
Ten years from now I’ll be paying still.
